This short piece was emailed to us on March 25, 2015 by Martin & Zerfoss, one of our all-time favorite clients. We’ve been friends for over 20 years now. The author, Matt Yabroudy, has several good articles on their website. I give my complete recommendation to this firm for your business and personal insurance needs.
The Importance of Updating Trusts
Heath Ledger never updated his will after the birth of his daughter. What ensued were court hearings, chaos, and family members publicly fighting over his estate.
After Jerry Garcia, the leader of the band Grateful Dead, died, his widow and his ex-wife launched a four-year-long court battle over his estate because Garcia’s will conflicted with earlier promises he’d made to his ex-wife. His ex-wife settled for $1.5 million instead of fighting in the courts for the $250,000 a year for 20 years that Jerry promised her.
Do you have a will? If you don’t, the state will decide how your assets are distributed, and even who will be the guardians of your minor children. And once you have a will, it is important to make sure it is current and up-to-date with your wishes.
Martin & Zerfoss, Inc. is partnering with a few local law firms that specialize in Estate Planning & Trusts. To get a better gauge of our clientele’s needs we politely ask that you complete this brief survey about your estate planning and business succession needs. Our goal is to continue to provide our clients with the proper tools and guidance they need in the event of an untimely death or disability.
The survey can be accessed by clicking the following link: Trust Survey.
